Camping With Infants
Our family has enjoyed camping with our children from infancy on. We have found that they are quite flexible and love being outdoors. Some of our suggestions for camping with infants are:
- Bring a portable pop-up crib
- For very small babies (those that cannot yet roll over), a Moses basket fits nicely inside of a tent and takes less space than a portable crib. However, you may still want to bring a portable crib to set up outside of the tent for playing.
- Make sure that your portable crib has a mosquito net to put over the top. This keeps out the bugs while the baby is outdoors. When inside the tent, this is not necessary assuming that your tent is kept closed and is water tight (so bugs cannot enter, as well).
- Make sure to bring sleepwear that is appropriate for the temperature. Keep in mind that temperature sometimes drops during the night, so multiple layers are great that can be added or removed. You will want to make sure that your baby does not get too hot or cold.
- Keep your infant close by at all times – we recommend an infant backpack or sling so that the parent can “wear” the infant and still assist with camping tasks such as cleaning, cooking, or setting up, etc.
- If bottle feeding, we recommend using pre-prepared/liquid formula that you will not have to mix.
